StatusNet, the startup that runs a micro blogging service, has raised $1.27 million in a Series A round led by FirstMark Capital. StatusNet is an open source platform that helps organizations incorporate micro messaging into their domain.

Facebook is reportedly closing in on the acquisition of Hot Potato, a social activity service that allows users to “check-in” to events and locations, similar to Foursquare and Gowalla. The service has not seen explosive growth yet, but a Facebook acquisition could take care of that.

Twitter is reporting that the company is handling 800 million queries per day, up 33% from their last public report in April. By comparison, comScore reporting that Yahoo did 9.4 billion queries in December.
